CASHMERE — Authorities have identified a Cashmere woman who died Thursday when she was struck by a BNSF Railway train in downtown Cashmere.
The woman was identified as 31-year-old Melinda I. Smith, the Chelan County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release Friday. Detectives and the Chelan County Coroner’s Office notified her next of kin Friday.
Authorities were advised and dispatched at around 11:55 a.m. Thursday to a person being struck by a eastbound train near Division Street and Mission Avenue in Cashmere.
The reporting party, a BNSF employee, said the train struck a person standing on the train tracks just east of the train crossing, according to the sheriff’s office. Smith died at the scene.
The investigation into the collision remains ongoing.
Kendall Kirkham Sloan, a BNSF Director of External Communications, said in an email that there were no injuries to the crew.
